Gravity is overrated. Balloons defy gravity, boredom, plain-ness, and make every occasion more special. They add a touch of whimsy and joy to our parties. Unfortunately, these uplifting decorations are pretty bad for the environment.
Mylar balloons suck (get it?) and even natural latex are not great. While latex is a natural product derived from rubber trees, it can take years to decompose, especially in marine environments. Mylar balloons are even worse. They’re made from a type of plastic called polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and are not biodegradable at all. They can persist in the environment for hundreds of years. Hundreds! And according to studies, balloons are among the top three most harmful pollutants to marine wildlife, alongside plastic bags and bottles.
So what is a Greener Gatherer to do given the environmental impact of traditional balloons? Well, we’ve got options! Let’s take a look:
Greener Gatherings Alternative: Paper Decorations
Paper decorations, such as tissue paper pom-poms, paper lanterns, and paper chains, are an eco-friendly alternative to balloons. They’re easy to save and reuse making them a more economical choice as well. They can be made from recycled paper and most are biodegradable, making them a more sustainable choice. These decorations come in a variety of sizes, colors and designs, allowing for creativity and customization to fit any party theme. And you can DIY it (we’ll have an article on that soon). There are also lots of local vendors you can find on sites like Etsy, which help you support your local economy and reduce on shipping costs, time and emissions!
Greener Gatherings Alternative: Fabric Bunting and Banners
Fabric bunting and banners are reusable, durable, and can be made from organic or recycled fabrics (what’s bunting, you ask? Little pieces of fabric, like flags, hanging down in patterns). These decorations can be used multiple times and are easy to store between events. They add a charming touch to any party and can be customized with messages, patterns, and colors if you want to get creative.
Greener Gatherings Alternative: Plant-Based Decorations
Using plants as decorations not only adds a natural beauty to your event but also minimizes environmental impact. Potted plants and even dried floral arrangements can be used to create stunning centerpieces and decor. After the party, plants can be kept and enjoyed or given as gifts to guests. Also, check out our article on floral arrangements!
Greener Gatherings Alternative: LED Fairy Lights
LED fairy lights are a reusable and energy-efficient alternative to balloons. They create a magical atmosphere and can be used indoors or outdoors. Battery-operated options are available for areas without electrical outlets, and solar-powered lights are a great choice for outdoor events. Plus, our kids love to string them up in their rooms.
Greener Gatherings Alternative: Embrace Mother Nature
Incorporating natural elements like leaves, branches, pine cones, and seashells into your decor can create a beautiful and environmentally friendly setting. These items can be collected from nature and returned after the event, leaving no waste behind.
Greener Gatherings Alternative: Edible Decorations
Edible decorations, such as fruit arrangements, cookie towers, and candy displays, can serve as both decor and treats for guests. This option reduces waste and adds a unique, delicious element to your party. It’s a bit more work, so only tackle it if you can spare the time!
Other reasons to Blow Off Balloons
If you need a bit more convincing, just think of some of the other benefits to axing these accoutrements. Say goodbye to:
Headaches from Blowing Them Up: Save yourself the hassle and potential dizziness from inflating balloons.
Incessant Squeaking: No more annoying squeaky sounds as balloons rub against each other and other surfaces.
Kids Fighting Over Them: Eliminate the arguments and tears that often arise when kids tussle over balloons.
Constant Fear of Bursting: Avoid the nerve-wracking anticipation of not knowing when a balloon might unexpectedly pop.
Balloon Scraps Everywhere: Spare yourself from finding little pieces of popped balloons scattered around your home or party venue.
Choking Hazards: Reduce the risk of small children or pets ingesting balloon fragments, ensuring a safer environment for everyone.
So, while traditional balloons have been a beloved part of celebrations for many years, their environmental impact is too significant for us at Greener Gatherings to ignore. By choosing sustainable alternatives, we can still create festive and memorable parties without harming the planet. From paper and fabric decorations to natural and reusable elements, there are plenty of eco-friendly options available. And, there are new companies popping up all the time with sustainable solutions. For example, we are intrigued by the alternative balloon garlands from Minnidip (the inflatable pool people)–we haven’t personally vetted them yet, but have a look and tell us what you think!
At Greener Gatherings, we believe in celebrating responsibly and making choices that protect our environment. Together, we can create joyful events that leave a positive impact on the world around us.
